The following pieces are made from both insulation boards and from plain ol' shipping packaging styrofoam. I was able to acquire a mother load from a dumpster. The store bought foam board insulation can be had in sheets of 4' x 8' with varying thicknesses between 1/2" and 3". I prefer my stones to be 3 inches thick and glue together several sheets with the Liquid Nails to obtain this size.

Shape
I draw the outline of a stone and cut with the jigsaw with an extra long blade. For some of the tight turns I use a Wonder Cutter - this device cuts with a heated wire. I then use the dremel to engrave the letters and various designs. Here's a page with some tombstone templates.

Weathering
There are a few methods for giving your tombstones an aged look. Lightly randomly spray areas with spray paint. The paint will literally dissolve the foam which will release deadly fumes. Applying cement glue will also dissolve the foam. Running a lighter will also warp and distort the foam. Randomly jabbing at the foam with a wood burner also gives a nice texture.

Painting
Use only latex paint. Do NOT use spray paint as it will dissolve the styrofoam. I buy the returned/mistake latex paint at my local hardware store for about $3 a gallon. I like painting the engraved areas with black and everything else in gray. I then stone speckle with different shades of gray using a sea sponge.

Epitaphs
Print out your chosen epitaphs using your handy-dandy computer. Save some ink by printing in draft mode. I tape the sheet of paper on the tombstone and prefer to poke hole holes every couple of milimeters just outside each letter. I then remove the paper to dremel away the foam using a routing bit for the end result of raised text.

Designs
I take inspiration from real tombstones and by looking at tombstones done by others such as the Gorgeous Sultry Keeba ( and here's a pic of the Puckering Goddess ).
